The feminist self-care salon- there are plenty of us who like to go to the salon, get massages, waxes, mani-pedis, etc. But what do you find when you get there? Heteronormative standards of 'beauty'? Magazines that tell you how to loose weight fast, or 30 new ways to 'please your man'? So rather than a beauty salon, a self-care salon. Haircuts for butches AND femmes. Classic AND radical nailpolishes and haircolors. Environmentally friendly facials with sensitive skin all natural ingredients. And on the reading table? Ms., Bitch, a Good Vibes catalog, brochures for The Keeper and Lunapads, and political materials- The Nation, Newsweek, Time (for those so inclined), etc. Riot grrl music piped in softly (so you can hear yourself think.) Is it a pipe dream, or would anyone else love to go to this? I'd be there EVERYDAY! I'm still trying to find a salon I like here in San Anto. After all, I was a butch when I lived here before and usually got Golden Rios $4.95 haircuts.
